Georgia Data Base and Network

Internet Map Server

There are four ways to view these Internet maps: 1) with a simple standard Internet Web browser, 2) in an ArcMap GIS software session, 3) with the ArcExplorer viewer, or 4) ArcExplorer Web Edition.  The first method is the easiest and most direct.  The ArcMap and ArcExplorer- Java methods allow you to add local data sources or other Internet-served maps to the DCA Internet-served maps and provide additional features for analysis and printing.  The ArcExplorer- Web Edition, is a free service that requires no software download or installation and allows you to customize and save your maps to an account you can open again later.

Internet Web Browser

To view the maps with your Internet Web browser click on the named links below1.  Please be aware that until you zoom in some map layers may not be visible, including the featured map layer.  This scale dependent viewing was imposed to prevent the unnecessary drawing of too much detail at the smaller scale (large area). As you zoom in to a larger scale (smaller area) the other map layers will then become available for viewing.  Also note that some map layers may not be selected by default for drawing so you will need to select their ‘Visible’ check box in the Layer List and click on the ‘Refresh Map’ button to view them.  DCA has also developed MapViews, a customized version of this Internet map browser for the PlanBuilder system, which may be accessed at http://www.GeorgiaPlanning.com

ArcExplorer- Java Edition

ArcExplorer Java Edition is a free lightweight GIS data viewer that can access these Internet map services.2  Using ArcExplorer on your computer will allow you to add and view your own GIS map layers, or other Internet-served maps, along with those from the DCA Internet map server.  Add the DCA Internet map services to your ArcExplorer viewer by indicating http://www.rdis.org as an ‘Internet Server’ data source when you add data.  The same scale dependent viewing behavior described above for the DCA maps in the Internet Web browser applies to ArcExplorer as well.  A free copy of the ArcExplorer viewer, along with complete instructions for its installation and usage, may be obtained at http://www.esri.com/software/arcexplorer/  Once you have opened one of the DCA map services in ArcExplorer you can add other local maps from your computer or other Internet-served maps and save the custom project to you local computer.

ArcExplorer- Web Edition

ArcExplorer Web Edition is a free Internet accessible viewer that can access these Internet map services.2  Using ArcExplorer on your computer will allow you to view any Internet-served maps, along with those from the DCA Internet map server.  Add the DCA Internet map services to your ArcExplorer Web Eidtion viewer by indicating http://www.rdis.org as an ‘Internet Server’ data source when you add data.  The same scale dependent viewing behavior described above for the DCA maps in the Internet Web browser applies to ArcExplorer as well.  ArcExplorer- Web Edition, along with complete instructions for its usage, may be accessed at http://www.esri.com/software/arcexplorer/  Once you have opened one of the DCA map services in this ArcExplorer viewer you can add other Internet-served maps and save the custom map projects to a free account you can set up on an ESRI server.

ArcMap

You may also view these Internet map services using ArcMap (part of the ArcView, ArcEditor, or ArcInfo licensed family of ArcGIS software).3 You can add one or more of our Web map services to your ArcMap document (MXD) by adding them from  http://www.rdis.org as an ‘Internet Server’ data source when you add data. Names available DCA Web map services are listed in the table below.  This will allow you to add and view your own GIS map layers with those of the DCA Internet map service.  The same scale dependent viewing behavior described above for the Internet Web browser applies to their use in ArcMap as well.

The Geography Network

You may combine maps from several Internet map server sources into a single ArcExplorer project (*.axl) or ArcMap document (*.mxd), for example, you may access additional Internet-served maps at the Geography Network http://www.geographynetwork.com/  and combine these into a single ArcExplorer or ArcMap display along with the map services offered from the DCA Internet map server.
